Education

A child should never go hungry; their stomachs nor their souls. Music is a special type of medicine for our soul that no doctor could prescribe, but a music teacher could. A music teacher’s job is to teach every child the rhythms of life and expression of the heart. As an educator, it is my goal to teach students how to speak when there are no words to speak–to always be musicking.

To have a student engaged and doing is an essential course of instruction. When they are doing, they are musicking, and when they are musicking, they are learning. Musicking is anything from performing, to improvising, to composing. In my classroom, you will constantly see all children doing this.

As a teacher, I want to create a safe and welcoming environment for learning. I would do this by making the classroom very student centered. Not only will my students get a say in music that we work on, but they will be learning music that touches close to home. Incorporating culture within my classroom is very important to me because everyone has a story. Culture is built upon the music created in every individual culture. My students will be learning about their classmates, and themselves through this process of musicking.

Music is a teamwork subject in life. It teaches gesture, communication, and working together. In my classroom, students will do these things everyday while collaborating with their peers. They will learn that together, learn inclusivity, and learn they are stronger together than working alone. Working together, we can create such an amazing masterpiece.

Music is food for the soul, and it provides for all. As music educators, we just have to provide the meal
